Mukono Municipality’s Omoding Herbert Voices Concerns Over NRM’s Electoral Integrity

In a formal letter dated 27th May 2025, Omoding Herbert, a dedicated member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) representing Mukono Municipality, has raised serious concerns regarding the party’s recent internal election processes. Addressed to the Secretary General of NRM via the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and copied to the Party President, the petition highlights significant flaws in the use of the lining-up voting method.

Omoding contends that this voting approach compromises the core principles of transparency, fairness, and democratic participation. He asserts that the lining-up system disproportionately benefits wealthy and influential individuals, enabling those with resources, such as top government officials, to sway votes through bribery and intimidation. This, he claims, marginalizes grassroots leaders, especially women and youth, undermining the party’s future inclusivity and diversity.

According to him, the current electoral method has allowed the powerful to dominate nominations, stifling healthy competition and promoting self-interest over party development. Such practices threaten the integrity of NRM’s leadership and risk alienating genuine grassroots members committed to democratic ideals.

To address these issues, Omoding proposes two urgent measures:

  1. Repeat Elections: Conduct new elections in cases where top officials’ involvement may have compromised fairness, ensuring a level playing field for all candidates.
  2. Investigation and Nullification of Alleged Bribery Cases: Annul elections tainted credible bribery allegations and re-conduct them under transparent and impartial conditions.

He emphasizes that safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process is vital for restoring trust within the party. By adopting these reforms, NRM can foster a more inclusive environment that encourages active participation from women, youth, and grassroots members, ultimately strengthening the party’s unity and democratic foundation.

Omoding concludes his appeal urging the party leadership to prioritize this matter and act swiftly to uphold the principles of fairness and democracy in future internal elections.
