A Double Date with Destiny: Mzee Nathan Okori Passes Away on Anniversary of Son’s Death
The Okori family and the nation of Uganda are in mourning following the passing of Mzee Nathan Okori, the patriarch of the late former Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah. In a turn of events described many as “uncanny” and “spiritually symbolic,” Mzee Okori breathed his last on March 20, 2026—exactly four years to the day after the passing of his son.
The Final Chapter
Mzee Okori, aged 97, passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu District. He had been admitted to the facility just two days prior, battling severe respiratory complications. Despite the best efforts of the medical team at Lacor, the elderly statesman succumbed to his illness on Friday morning.
Since the death of his son in 2022, Mzee Okori had been residing at Jacob Oulanyah’s country home in Ayom Lony Village, Lalogi Sub-County, Omoro District.
A Poignant Coincidence
The timing of Mzee Okori’s death has sent shockwaves through the community. To die on the same calendar date as one’s child—especially a child of such national stature—is a rare occurrence that has left many reflecting on their deep bond.
-
Jacob Oulanyah: Died March 20, 2022 (Seattle, USA).
-
Nathan Okori: Died March 20, 2026 (Gulu, Uganda).
Current Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, confirmed the news with a heavy heart, noting the profound weight of this “double anniversary.” Local leaders in Omoro District expressed that while Mzee Okori had been frail, his spirit remained tied to the legacy of his son until the very end.
Legacy of Resilience
Mzee Okori became a household name following the death of Jacob Oulanyah, known for his candid and often heartbreaking commentary regarding his son’s health and the circumstances surrounding his demise. He was a man who stood as a pillar for the Acholi community, representing a generation of traditional values and paternal strength.
“To lose a pillar is hard, but to lose him on the very day we remember the man he gave to the nation is a sign that their journey is now truly joined,” noted a local official from Lalogi.
