Erias Lukwago Charged in Treason-Linked Case Amid Political Tensions

KAMPALA — Veteran Ugandan lawyer and opposition figure Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason, a legal offense that accuses an individual of knowing about treasonous activities and failing to report them to authorities.

Lukwago, who serves as legal counsel for opposition leader Kizza Besigye, was arraigned before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on June 17, where he denied the charges and was remanded to Luzira Prison pending a bail hearing.

The prosecution alleges that between 2021 and 2024, Lukwago had prior knowledge of alleged plans linked to treason involving Besigye and others but did not notify state authorities. The charges have sparked strong reactions from legal experts, opposition supporters, and human rights groups.

Lukwago’s arrest came days after reports emerged that security operatives surrounded his residence in Kampala and detained him under unclear circumstances. His legal team claims he suffered severe health complications while in detention, including hypertension and spinal injuries.

The Uganda Law Society and the Law Society of Kenya have condemned the charges, describing them as an attack on legal representation and the independence of lawyers handling politically sensitive cases.

The case has intensified political debate in Uganda, with critics arguing it reflects growing pressure on opposition leaders and their legal teams. Supporters of Lukwago have called for his immediate release, while government authorities insist the legal process is being followed.

Political analysts say the case could have wider implications for Uganda’s justice system, especially regarding the role of defense lawyers in high-profile political trials.

As the court prepares to hear Lukwago’s bail application, the nation watches closely, with many questioning whether the case is purely legal or politically motivated.
