THE RISE OF A LEGEND: Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium Hits 50% Milestone
LIRA CITY — The dream of a world-class sporting arena in Northern Uganda is no longer just a blueprint on a desk. As of late March 2026, the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium has officially crossed the 50% completion mark, signaling a new era for athletics and football in the Lango sub-region.
A Promise Kept in Concrete and Steel
Named after Uganda’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist, the legendary John Akii-Bua, the stadium project has faced years of scrutiny and delays. However, the current pace under Egypt’s SAMCO National Construction Company has silenced the skeptics.
During a recent site inspection, Ministry of Sports officials and local Lira City leadership confirmed that the project is “firmly on track” to meet its January 2027 deadline.
Key Milestones Achieved Today:
The Structure: The 20,000-seat main bowl is taking shape, with the primary concrete works for the stands now largely completed.
The Roofing: In a major technical feat, the specialized roofing system for the grandstand is 25% finished.
Training Grounds: Perhaps the most impressive update is the drainage and irrigation system for the training pitches, which is now 100% complete.
Local Impact: The project has already employed over 400 local youths from Lira City East and West divisions, providing much-needed technical skills in specialized construction.
“This isn’t just about football; it’s about the dignity of Northern Uganda. For too long, our talent had to travel to Kampala to be seen. Soon, the world will come to Lira.”,Community Leader at the Gate 4 Construction Site.

Why the 50% Mark is a Game-Changer
Crossing the halfway point is more than just a statistic. It shifts the project from “structural work” to “finishing work.” Over the next six months, residents can expect to see:
Installation of the Tartan Track: A high-tech running surface designed to produce the next generation of Olympic sprinters.
Floodlight Installation: Enabling Lira to host international night matches for the first time in history.
The “Akii-Bua Effect”: Local hotels and businesses are already reporting increased inquiries as investors anticipate the influx of fans and athletes.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the progress is historic, challenges remain. The Lira City Council is currently under pressure to upgrade the access roads leading to the stadium to prevent traffic gridlock once the gates open. Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding a dedicated power substation to ensure the stadium remains lit during major CAF-sanctioned events.
The Verdict
The Akii-Bua Stadium is no longer a “ghost project.” It is a rising monument to Ugandan excellence. If the current momentum holds, Lira City will soon boast one of the most modern sporting facilities in East Africa, cementing its status as the regional capital of sports and commerce.
